Dr Axel is based off a real life doctor named Albert Schweitzer.

He arrived in Bangalla as a young man full of ambition and liked a drink. He was drunk during an operation and almost lost the patient, after saving the 20th Phantoms life he was given a second chance and started the hospital.

Lee Falk gave him two different names, Thor and Bjorn. Best option is to merge them which is an actual Scandinavian name "Thorbjorn" and has been used in recent newspaper stories.
